LIDAR

LiDAR, or light detection and ranging, is a popular remote sensing method used for measuring the exact distance of an object on the earth’s surface.

Data Processing

LiDAR is a remote sensing technology that stands for Light Detection And Ranging. Lidar technology measures distance by illuminating a target with a laser and analyzing the reflected light. It functions similar to the Sonar technology by fish to detect objects in the water and which humans use in boats to find objects or depth in water. Airplanes and helicopters are the most commonly used platforms for acquiring Lidar data over a large area. There are three main types of Lidar such as Airborne Lidar, Mobile Lidar and Terrestrial Lidar.

  • Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)
  • Laser-based technology enables the production of georeferenced 3D point clouds
  • 3D points are generated when laser pulses scan the terrain surface and record the time and intensity of the return signal to use as the raw input for each 3D point
  • The 3D points are post-processed to generate digital elevation models of bare earth and surface features
